Barnton Silver Band is celebrating success after competing in the Whit Friday Brass Band Contests on Saddleworth Moor.

Gifted musicians won first prize for deportment at at Greenfield on Friday, beating the world-famous Fairey Band into second place.

This competition, which dates back to 1884, attracts more than 100 brass bands to take part in 20 contests at various venues across moorland towns and villages.

Barnton entered six contests at Denshaw, Delph, Diggle, Dobcross, Friezland and Greenfield.

Chris Ravenscroft was praised for his navigation and the band's youngest player Ole was commended for being an excellent runner.

The band rehearses at Barnton Primary School every Tuesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

They are currently recruiting members for a training band. All ages from seven to 70 plus are welcome, including complete beginners.

A highly qualified musician provides tuition.
