ECO-ACTIVISTS are winning support for their campaign to protect the planet from climate change.

Extinction Rebellion Cheshire says its membership is continuing to grow and is calling on more residents to get involved.

Their next meeting is at 8pm on Tuesday, July 2 at St Joseph's Parish Centre, Woodford Lane in Winsford.

More than 150 people have already joined the group which is lobbying the government to immediate action.

Winsford GP Dr Kathy Fallon, who took part in the Extinction Rebellion protest in London, addressed the group's second meeting.

The mum-of-two said: "XR Cheshire is taking action to persuade the government to act now to stop biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2025."

"Historical evidence shows that major societal changes need the involvement of 3.5 per cent of the population to succeed. That is two million nationally or nearly 12,000 residents across Cheshire West needed to get involved to make the chance needed to mobilise change and save the planet.

"So the call is going out to get as many local people involved as possible."

Extinction Rebellion Cheshire is gaining support and appealing for more new members

Campaigners have set up working groups to raise awareness.

XR Cheshire will have a stall at St Joseph's parish fete on Saturday, June 29 and hope to attend various other community events.

Following last month's declaration of a climate emergency by Cheshire West and Chester Council, the group will be contacting the council pushing for urgent action.

Campaigners will be encouraging people to reduce the use of insecticides and single use plastics.
