LOSTOCK Lodge Care Home is celebrating Dementia Action Week 2019 with a packed schedule of activities and musical events.

The care home, based at the Cheshire Business Park, specialises in the care of elderly residents living with dementia.

The wellbeing and activities team has planned plenty of activities for people to enjoy throughout the week and invites the community to come and join in the events.

“We are looking forward to a fun week here at Lostock Lodge,” said activities coordinator Sarah Holt.

“All the staff team are very passionate about caring for our residents living with dementia and we have put a lot of thought and care into selecting a wide range of music, dancing and social activities that everyone enjoys and join in with, whilst allowing opportunity to raise awareness about dementia."

The theme of ‘Music for the Brain’ starts on Tuesday, May 14 at 3pm with an exclusive concert by Canadian singer-songwriter Mary Barry.

Mary is coming to the UK to perform at Lostock Lodge following her own battle with lung disease and rehabilitation at a specialist clinic in Germany.

The well-known and widely acclaimed singer, who thought that she’d never be able to sing again, will entertain residents with a selection of her own jazz and blues songs.

On Tuesday, May 21, Dementia Action Week starts with a visit from ukulele band ‘Lostock Ukes’ who are coming to perform for the residents.

The musical theme continues on Wednesday with singer Ed who will be performing in the dementia unit.

On Thursday there is a regular visit from local pre-school children who will be coming in the morning to perform nursery rhymes for the residents.

Music has been shown to have a dramatic effect on people living with dementia. Its power to soothe, stimulate and bring to mind long-forgotten memories is often observed by care staff and family members.

As well as the musical theme, residents will enjoy a day trip out on Wednesday. There is a planned ride on a steam train and lunch in a cafe.

On Thursday evening there is a buffet tea for residents and their families with a sing-a-long to finish off the week.
