A PARCEL of land has been sold at auction for £7,000 more than expected.

The 0.31-acre site at the junction of Brasenose Road and Freeman Road in the east of Didcot was the subject of a bidding war on Friday.

With a guide price of £5,000 plus fees, the land ended up going under the auctioneer’s hammer for £12,000.

The freehold site was among 138 lots being sold by regional land and property auctioneers Clive Emson.

It is not known what the new owner intends to use the land for but marketing literature advertising its sale said it could have a 'number of future uses.'

It said: "This unusual parcel of land extends to 0.12 hectares (0.31 acres).

"It is considered that there may be scope and potential for a variety of future uses, subject to all necessary consents being obtainable."

Any attempt to build on the land would need planning permission from South Oxfordshire District Council.

Rob Marchant, auctioneer, said: “There was keen interest in this plot of land, which sold for £12,000 in a bidding war. The final bid was £7,000 above estimate.

“It is considered that there may be scope and potential for a variety of future uses, subject to planning consents. However, we are not privy to any plans the new owner may or may not have.”

The next auction will be on June14.
