JUST over a third of the Cheshire West electorate voted in the local elections on Thursday – with the turnout as low as one-fifth in some areas of Northwich and Winsford.

Cheshire West and Chester Council verified the votes for the borough, town and parish council elections at Ellesmere Port Sports Village overnight.

The overall turnout for the CWAC election was 34.7 per cent – but the turnout was much lower in areas which could be considered as Labour strongholds.

Central and Grange ward, in Ellesmere Port, had the lowest turnout of 20 per cent, followed by the Wolverham ward, in Ellesmere Port, and Winsford Wharton – both at 22.1 per cent.

Turnout was also lower in Northwich’s three central wards – with Witton at 22.4 per cent, Winnington and Castle at 23.3 per cent and Leftwich at 25.8 per cent – than in its more rural outskirts.

The highest turnout was in Little Neston at 51.7 per cent, followed by Handbridge Park, in Chester, at 49.5 per cent and Tarporley at 47.4 per cent.

The election count will begin at 11am in Ellesmere Port Sports Village, with the first results expected from 11.45am.
