RESIDENTS are being urged to oppose plans for a new access to a proposed major housing development in Handforth

The call comes in relation to the planned demolition of a house, culverting of a brook and creation of vehicular and pedestrian access from Meriton Road /Hampson Crescent.

Housebuilder Anwyl Homes from North Wales is seeking permission from Cheshire East Council to knock down 15 Hampson Crescent.

The application also envisages the culverting of Dobbin Brook and the building of an access road to pave the way for the development of 250 houses on land between Clay Lane and Sagars Road, for which outline approval was given in 2018.

The application is being opposed by Cllr Barry Burkhill because of the traffic problems he claims it would create in the surrounding roads and back into Handforth.

He is calling for an alternative access point, and is encouraging residents to make their views known to Cheshire East Council by the comments deadline of May 8.

“We cannot stop any development, but we can try to see if we can get a different access which does not cause congestion in the centre of Handforth,” said Cllr Burkhill.

The proposed access road would disturb people living in Meriton Road and Sagars Road, he said, from residents on the planned new estate using the roads.

He said traffic from the new estate would use Bulkeley Road to join Wilmslow Road, rather than Sagars Road or Meriton Road, because its junction was controlled by traffic lights.

However this was not desirable for estate traffic, he said, as Bulkeley Road was only eight foot wide.

“Access to the new estate should be from the back end of the site and going across to the new airport road,” said Cllr Burkhill.

The application includes the creation of a temporary construction haul road and compound from Sagars Road. A report with the application said the housing development was due to be carried out in two parts. The first would be the demolition of 15 Hampson Crescent to facilitate access into the site.

All HGV traffic associated with the demolition works would access the site via the route from Wilmslow Road and Meriton Road. After the demolition phase the construction of the new dwellings and infrastructure would take place. This would be facilitated by a proposed ‘haul road’ and temporary access off Sagars Road to the south of the site.

The application reference number is 19/1797M.
