TIM Maxwell, the professional at Knutsford Golf Club, ended a wait last week to claim a prestigious title in style.

He celebrated a victory in the Manchester and District Golf Alliance's Strokeplay Championship, gaining inspiration from a tee shot on the 159-yard eighth hole that sent his ball unerringly into the cup for the seventh ace of his career.

From there the former Alliance captain, whose name features on a roll of honour for most of the group's other leading competitions, went on to win a scratch contest that has eluded him on every previous attempt.

He adjusted to a strong breeze, which was a test for some of the region's top players, on a firm course in excellent condition.

Maxwell went on to post the top score of 68 to see off a challenge from Ollie Smith (Ashton-on-Mersey), Andy Palmer and Alliance Order of Merit leader Phil Archer (Poulton Park).

Players partners Mark Bradley, Chorley's professional, and Palmer, his assistant pro, shared in the celebrations afterwards.

His previous most memorable ace was at San Lorenzo, in the Algarve, on the fifth hole during the annual Ryder Cup challenge match between Knutsford and neighbours Hale - a feat that cost him plenty after he paid for drinks at the 19th.
