A MAN and woman from Oxford have been charged in relation to the Extinction Rebellion protests in London.

Masses of campaigners gathered in the capital this week and last week to stage demonstrations, causing major disruption as roads were blocked.

As of 3pm yesterday, the Met Police said 69 people have been charged in connection with the Extinction Rebellion protests.

They will appear in various London courts over the next few days and weeks.

Among them are:

- Michael Betts, 45, of Walton Crescent, Jericho, Oxford. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, May 9. He has been charged with an offence contrary to Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986, and  obstruction of a highway. 

- Rowan Tilly, 61, of Percy Street, East Oxford. She is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, May 21, charged with an offence contrary to Section 14 of the Public Order Act 1986

More than 1,000 people have been arrested during the campaign, which started on April 15, while more than 10,000 police officers have been deployed to manage the crowds.

The group has staged the ongoing protest to highlight the climate change emergency, and force the government to take action.
