THE Guardian reported that a Northwich officer had died in Cologne.

After nine year’s service with the Colours, four of which were served on the western front, Lieutenant Francis Arthur Forster, who obtained his commission on the battlefield, passed away.

Mr and Mrs Forster, were informed two weeks prior that their son Lt Forster, 32, was seriously ill with influenza in a casualty clearing station in Cologne.

TRAGEDY surrounded the pop soul group The Foundations as they passed through the area while on tour.

Seven members of the group who sung Build Me Up Buttercup were travelling along the M6 past Cheshire when an elderly man appeared in their headlights.

The pop group member who was driving swerved but could not avoid the 80-year-old who was in the centre lane of the southbound carriageway.

The man sadly died and was identified as William Shaw from Warrington.

WINNINGTON Avenue won the Crewe and District League Division One Cup Final against Congleton Athletic 5-2.

The Guardian reported that Winnington played ‘like strangers’ in the opening period and found themselves 2-0 down.

But a heroic display from Pete Riley saw the Avenue forward bag all five goals to clinch the cup.

A FIRE raged through a bed store in Station Road.

Thousands of pounds worth of stock was destroyed in the blaze at Beds Galore and a woman had to be rescued from a flat over the terraced shop.

Firefighters said at the time that the fire had caused severe damage to the shop and two flats above it.
