A NORTHWICH restaurant which tragically lost a member of staff in March has raised almost £1,700 at a charity dinner held in his memory.

Bombay Quay, an Indian restaurant on Hayhurst Quay, hosted diners on Monday night, April 15, who helped raise funds for Warrington-based young suicide prevention charity Papyrus.

The team suffered a sudden loss on March 19 when a colleague, aged just 17, died near the Northwich railway line at the Weaver Railway Viaduct.

After pulling together to keep the restaurant open, Bombay Quay staff organised a set-menu event for Monday, raising £1,686.

Restaurant manager Jango Alam said his colleague would be remembered as a polite, hardworking, young man who always went the extra mile.

He said: “It’s very, very sad. He was such a nice kid and you never expect this to happen to someone so close to you.

“He is a person who was friendly with everyone – just a regular guy, one of us. He was always jolly, always laughing.

“He was so polite and hardworking – you would have to pressure him to take his break and within five minutes he would be back again.

“That’s the kind of guy he was – committed, intelligent. It’s such a sad loss and people who knew him have come across and said how shocking it was and how he was such a lovely guy.”

The charity dinner event cost £15 per head, with £5 of that donated to Papyrus.

A set menu featured poppadoms and chutney, a choice of curry, and rice or naan bread. Entertainment on the night was provided by performer Glen Merson.

The restaurant also took further Papyrus donations through its Facebook page.
