ALMOST 40 teams have taken part in the annual charity Swimathon at Northwich Memorial Court, raising money for good causes.

The 19th annual Northwich Rotary Swimathon saw 38 teams – comprising 227 swimmers – dive into the fundraising efforts on Saturday and Sunday, March 23 and 24.

While sponsorship money will take a few weeks to collect, it is hoped that the amount raise will surpass last year's impressive total.

Rupert Adams, chairman of the Swimathon committee, said: “Whilst this is primarily a fun event that is open to all ages and abilities where the emphasis is on fundraising, there is inevitably an element of competition between some of the teams.

"This year over 5,100 lengths were swum, which equates to a distance of 80 miles – the distance between Northwich and Nottingham – with Northwich Centurions Endurance Team pipping the Memorial Court Lifeguards to reach the top of the table achieving 229 lengths in their allotted 55 minute slot.

"We are hoping to exceed the amount raised last year which was £12,000. In total more than £152,000 has been raised through the Swimathon over the last 18 years.”

Participants were supported throughout by a vocal crowd of friends, colleagues and family members.

The event is organised by the Rotary Club, and supported by staff from Brio Leisure.

Northwich Rotary Club president Denise Watkinson said: “In the 19th year of our Rotary Swimathon we once again saw teams enthusiastically raising money for good causes, including our selected charities The Cheshire and Warrington Carers Trust and Northwich Leg Club.

"I would like to thank everyone who participated, helped or came along to watch – everyone’s input contributed immensely to the success of the event."

All the money raised through sponsorship goes to good causes as the costs incurred in running the event are covered by sponsorship from Ubuntu Wealth Management, along with a contribution towards catering from Roberts Bakery, and support from Brio.

Garnet Ronander, from Ubuntu Wealth Management, said: “Our business ethos is about supporting others in our community and we are very proud to have teamed up with Northwich Rotary Club to sponsor the 2019 Swimathon.

"There was a real buzz both around and within the pool this year. It was equally fantastic for those taking part and for those spectating, and we are optimistic that the nominated charities will receive a generous amount of funding.”
