A GENEROUS donation from a parent has set Witton Church Walk schoolchildren whizzing around the playground on new balance bikes.

The school took part in a two-week 'Ready, Set, Ride' taster session with UK British Cycling, borrowing a set of 12 bikes to aid physical development of nursery and reception children.

After it came to an end, one parent made a donation so the school could buy their own set of 12 bikes as well as a ramp.

Nursery teacher Becky Ridd said: "During the two weeks, we were able to get lots of children involved, and parents commented on how fantastic it was.

"One of the parents said they would like to donate quite a substantial amount of money so that we could get our own set of bikes, and all the children in reception and nursery could have access to them."

Northwich Guardian:

As well as getting younger children into cycling, the pedal-less bikes aid physical development better than stabilisers and have been a hit with the children.

"They love it," Becky said. "Some of the children started out very unsure – it's a funny sensation for them just having to balance.

"Some were very unstable and wouldn't sit on the seats, but now they're gliding around, lifting their feet up and going over the ramp."

Witton Church Walk would like to thank the parent, who wishes to remain anonymous.
