GIRLS are encouraged to become engineers and scientists and not let gender pose a barrier.

That's the message of the fourth Winsford Women's Day being hosted by Motherwell Cheshire.

International Women’s Day is a global call to action for accelerating gender parity and will be celebrated by the local community on Saturday, March 9.

This year's theme is women in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and Balance for Better to promote equality of the sexes in the workplace.

Founder of the Women’s Day events Kate Blakemore said: “I chose these themes as they are so important for women and girls to understand that their gender is not a barrier to them going into whatever profession they choose. I also wanted to celebrate the local women in STEM professions to inspire others”

This year the event will be held at the Winsford campus of Warrington and Vale Royal College.

College STEM director Catherine Brierley said: "We believe the promotion of STEM subjects is paramount to engage with girls to produce the engineers and scientist of the future.

"This engagement has resulted in many students moving onto some excellent university courses, and careers in blue chip companies .

"The day is a celebration of all things STEM and we welcome the local community in visiting the college and enjoying the event as our guests”

The High Sheriff of Cheshire Alexis Redmond MBE will be opening the event.

Guest speakers include author Kate Cousens on the topic 'Climbing the ladders in heels'.

PC Jo Green will talk about opportunities for females in the police force. Dr Sally Freeman from University of Manchester will speak about opportunities in STEM.

Local charities and women in business will be showcasing their work and selling their handmade crafts.

Kate added: "The day is about celebrating women in the local community and empowering all women to be proud of themselves and others. Motherwell’s strapline is Women supporting Women and this event does just that”

The Motherwell Cheshire team will be in different locations across Winsford the week leading up to the day to promote their event.

They will be handing out special badges and information on their services.

The day is free to attend and starts from 10am with talks, workshops and activities running until 3.30pm.

Everyone who attends will receive a goody bag.
