SWEET treats for children look to have had their day at the popular Knutsford Bunny Hop.

The event has been running since 2014, with Knutsford Town Council taking over responsibility for its organisation last year.

Many shops and restaurants and cafes get involved by having posters in their windows, dressing up and giving out sweets.

The Events and Town Centre Management Committee was asked to consider using part of the budget to contribute to sweets for the businesses to hand out to help with the cost of the shops providing them.

However the committee decided to look at other options for this year’s event, which takes place on April 20, rather than sweets.

Cllr James Power said he did not want to be a ‘killjoy’, but he would be happier to see something other than sweets being handed out to children at the Bunny Hop.

He suggested the council should look at healthier options, possibly something fun which was not edible, ‘but definitely not sweets’.

He did not believe the council would be giving out the right message by spending money on sweets for children, which he said caused ‘extra aggravation’ for parents.

“Often I’m stuck trying to hide sweets which have been handed to my child because she goes absolutely hyper on them,” he said.

Cllr Power said a town retailer created chocolate-covered strawberries, which could be an alternative to sweets, although deputy town clerk Lisa Benskin pointed out the time involved needed to make them and that they were perishable products.
