A WIRRAL man is absolutely furious that cars, vans and lorries keep parking INCHES from his front door, meaning he sometimes cannot get out of his own home.

The man, who lives in Hoylake in Wirral said it happens “more or less” every day, despite there being double yellow lines running along the road.

The problem has been ongoing for over three years, with a “constant stream of new offenders”.

He wished to remain anonymous, but raised concerns over potential dangers, posting images of cars, vans and lorries to social media to ask the council and police for help.

But while he’s asked for a bollard to be installed outside his front door, the most he has been offered thus far is a traffic cone.

His street is in the centre of Hoylake close to the town’s main road, Market Street, but the resident said his is the only property that suffers.

He added: “It’s the spot outside my front door which they choose, no one else has the same problem although parking is a pain here.

“My reaction is always ‘why are people so inconsiderate and selfish that they’d rather dangerously obstruct my front door than find somewhere else to park?’

“I’ve been moaning on the council for ages but they always just treat each occurrence like a unique case.”

He said he’s also concerned about the dangers parking so close could cause for passers by, adding: “With a pram, you’re blind-sided too, so we’ve had a couple of near misses with my nephew who’s only a toddler.

“Apart from the fact it’s a nuisance and an eyesore, having a huge van parking there and giving you problems getting in and out – the fact I’ve nearly been hit as I leave the house is my biggest issue.

“My main concern is stepping out of the front door as a van is pulling up, which they do at speed sometimes, and being hit. I don’t want to end up a martyr and having a memorial bollard!”

He said he’d like to see a “simple bit of road furniture like a bollard”, but that a “tactically placed” one-way sign would solve the problem.

He added: “The most help I’ve had is a policeman who gave me a traffic cone to put outside.”

When contacted for comment, Cllr Stuart Whittingham, cabinet member for highways and transport, said he was “sorry to hear” about the situation.

He said: “Wirral Council’s contractor carries out regular enforcement across the borough, and areas which have been reported as having significant issues with illegal parking are highlighted for targeted action, often based on the numbers of complaints we receive.

“I’m sorry to hear that this resident has had repeated issues with people parking illegally and dangerously, and I have asked officers to focus additional enforcement action in that area.

“This type of irresponsible parking will not be tolerated and those found to be parking their vehicles in this way will be prosecuted.”

Paul Mountford from Merseyside Police’s Safer Roads Partnership said: “Drivers who drive or park their cars on pavements place pedestrians at an increased risk of injury and worse. They show no consideration for pedestrians, children in prams, the disabled and partially sighted who are forced to move into the road as a result of their recklessness.

“It is a distressing fact that many pedestrians are struck by cars after being forced to walk in the road because the pavement is blocked by a parked car.

“It is an offence to drive on to a pavement and an offence to cause obstruction to other road users, including pedestrians. Vehicles causing obstruction may be issued with a fixed penalty notice and in some cases removed at the owner’s expense.

“The driver of any vehicle deemed to have caused or contributed to a road traffic collision by its dangerous positioning risks prosecution and potentially imprisonment.”

Lee Floorstok and Cormar Carpets – two firms identifiable from their vehicles in the images sent to the Local Democracy Service – were also contacted for comment.
