THE Middlewich Heritage Trust is set to see the benefits of a salt symposium held at the Lion Salt Works in Northwich.

The event was held on Saturday, October 20 2018 and it was organised by the Newcomen Society.

After a successful day the society decided to share the profit from the symposium between Middlewich Heritage Trust, Lion Salt Works and the Newcomen Society.

Speakers from Middlewich Heritage Trust included Kerry Kirwan -heritage development officer and Trustee Steve Broadfoot, a chartered mechanical engineer who has spent his career designing, installing and refurbishing pumps and pumping installations

Kerry said: ““Our restoration project is underway, largely thanks to Historic England, Heritage Lottery fund and the Association for Industrial Archaeology.

“We still have a long way to go and we are delighted to receive support from the Newcomen Society. The money means that the Trust can invest more towards volunteers on site, making their experience more productive and enjoyable.”

Volunteering opportunities for this project are now open; roles include digitisation of the George Twigg Archive, helping with marketing and promotion of the Murgatroyd’s Restoration Project.

Roles on site will start in March this year, helping with ground-works, clearing debris, helping the removal of the gantry, project recording and works to the well head and brine pumps.

Kerry added: “We want to encourage study and provide new skills for anyone interested in archives, archaeology, history or engineering and technology.”
