A family-run bakery has reached a huge milestone after serving Bromley residents for 80 years.

Sponge Kitchens Ltd was set up just before the Second World War in 1938 and now has three outlets in Beckenham, Hayes and Downham.

James Stewart, the grandson of the original founder, hosted a celebration party on Saturday (December 15) on Wickham Road to mark the occasion.

A stunning replica cake of the Beckenham shop was made, which James said took his head designer, Zahir, between 30-40 hours to complete.

"It is still in the window, it is too sad to just eat it," he laughed while speaking to News Shopper.

The intricate details, which included glass lighting and a window display of the bakery, left visitors speechless.

Customers were also treated to free cake, a goody bag and vouchers to help celebrate and mark 80 years of service.

James has managed the business since 2001 after starting out as a baker before studying bakery management in college.

He said: "I am extremely proud to be doing it. I love it. It is hard work and can be stressful but day to day is very rewarding.

"It is creative, you start in the morning with just flour and ingredients and you make these amazing cakes. It is really rewarding."

Speaking about his best memories, James added: "The highlight is how after all these years we have remained a friendly and local bakery serving the community in all manner of times.

"It still makes our day when we see our customers here for a coffee, and a bite to eat, or eagerly excited to collect their very special cake."

He paid tribute to his customers who have stuck with the bakery throughout the years.

"We have had so many lovely comments," James said. "From old people who used to work here to our customers who are always so loyal and come in every day.

"They are very happy for us."

James said the anniversary was a special day and he was grateful for MP Bob Stewart who visited to pass on his congratulations.
