THE student council at St Nicholas High School grilled Weaver Vale MP Mike Amesbury on everything from college provision to Brexit during a recent visit.

Mike spent time with council members at the Greenbank Lane school on Thursday, November 29.

He spoke of his political background, and representing constituents rather than himself.

Joshua Freestone, a Year 12 student, reviewed the visit.

He said: “He explained the real human side to politics, the compassion that fuels most MPs representing a constituency.

“In the process of doing this he made a conscious effort to encourage young people to get involved in politics, speaking strongly about the necessity for a greater diversity within the House of Commons. The students came out of the session with smiles and a newfound enthusiasm for politics, on a national and local basis.”
