THE GIRLS section of West Kirby United is growing thanks to support from local sponsors.

Over the last six months, manager of West Kirby United under 9's and under 11's girls teams Paul Wood has seen an increase in girls wanting to take part in the sport.

Growing from just one under 10's team last season, the club have now had to begin their under 7's and under 9's teams.

This has been helped by sponsors Lewis Evan's accountants, who sponsor the under 7's and under 11's plus Figo's Mediterranean Kitchen who sponsor the under 9's - two local businesses who are helping to make women's football all the more popular.

Paul told the Globe: "There are a number of reasons, behind the growth.

"The England team's World Cup success has helped with the profile of the game.

"However the main reason I see, is better organisation and funding of clubs and leagues.

"If a girl attends a training session that is well planned, organised, and yet still fun, they will get a lot more out of it than simply having a kick about.

"What I have seen in our club is girl’s who did not know each other a few months ago, coming together and becoming really good friend.

"To quote my nine-year-old 'dad I wish, all of my team could be in my class.'"

All three of the girls teams play in the Cheshire Girl's League at Pensby High School on Saturday mornings.

Due to the popularity, West Kirby United is setting up another under 11's team who are scheduled to start playing in the league from January 2019.
