A FATHER on his way to pick up his child from primary school was over the drink-drive limit and “visibly under the influence of alcohol”, a court has heard.
Thomas Tavaya, 50, was driving his Ford Mondeo on Bates Avenue, in Darlington, when he was stopped by police who immediately conducted a roadside breath test at around 4pm on November 5.
Tavaya, of Baydale Road, Darlington, pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving without insurance.
His solicitor said that the 50-year-old had been drinking into the early hours and enjoying a night out in the town before sleeping then driving to pick up his child.
Tavaya's solicitor added: "It's a common tale. It's most unfortunate and a hard lesson learnt.
"He's the breadwinner of his family and he works as a health care assistant at the Friarage Hospital, in Northallerton. He'll now become very familiar with public transport."
Tavaya was disqualified from driving for a year and fined £350. He must also pay £85 costs and £35 victim surcharge.
