NORTHWICH has been pipped to the 'Rising Star' Great British High Street Award at a ceremony today.

Todmorden, in Calderdale, picked up the top prize with it Burnley Road entry at a ceremony in London today, Thursday.

Northwich town centre and Barnes high street, in London, were left runners up.

Northwich Business Improvement District had entered the town into the awards, and impressed judges on a visit on October 11.

Alongside judges' decisions, winners were picked from votes cast on social media in the run-up to the ceremony.

Altrincham was crowned England's best high street in the 'Champions' category.

The Rising Star shortlisting entry for Northwich said: "Northwich BID entered under the Community pillar, with aspirations to develop a town centre that provides multiple uses including retail, leisure, co-working space and experiences.

"They have already been leading on a series of events and initiatives, focusing on working with partners and community groups to develop activities within the town centre.

"Their plans now include delivering an International Street Festival in October 2018 with their partner Cheshire West and Chester Council and looking at co-working spaces within the town centre, creating a ‘destination video’ for Northwich featuring local heroes."
