TWO-WAY traffic will be in operation on the town centre gyratory next weekend, as essential engineering work takes place on Town Bridge.

The swing bridge, the northernmost in a pair with Hayhurst Bridge, will be closed from 6am to 8pm on Sunday, November 25.

As a result, the one-way gyratory system involving Watling Street, Chesterway and Castle Street will be opened up to two-way traffic.

The Canal and River Trust, which manages the River Weaver navigation including the two bridges, will be overseeing the works.

A spokesman for the trust said: “There will be a two-way traffic operating system on Hayhurst Bridge.

“Town Bridge is currently in a position where we can’t swing it open fully, and so it requires some remedial work to ensure that can happen.”

The closure is advertised by Cheshire West and Chester Council as lasting for approximately two Sundays, but Canal and River Trust engineers say they are only likely to use November 25.

The gyratory system was first trialled from January 2012, and became permanent two-and-a-half years later.

The process of converting the road system involved lengthy consultation, with the Canal and River Trust working with the council to plan for such occasions. CWAC was unavailable for comment as the Guardian went to print.
