THE Northwich mayor has reflected on a ‘poignant’ remembrance service in St Helen Church on Sunday, November 11.

Remembrance Day this year marked the centenary of the First World War and many people attended the service.

Cllr Alison Gerrard, mayor of Northwich, said: “The day went very well, all the staff worked so hard and it was very well attended.

“There was only standing room in the church for the service at 10am before moving to the cenotaph at 10.50am.

The parade started at 9.45am in the Police Headquarters and made its way to St Helen Church for the church service.

After the service the parade reformed and walked down church road to the cenotaph for the Act of Remembrance and 40 wreaths were laid out there.

After the Act of Remembrance the parade reformed and walked into town where the town mayor placed another two wreaths, one in Brio Leisure Centre and another in the Dane Bridge memorial.

The mayor believed that the event took on special significance with all who attended due to it being the centenary of the war.

She said: “I think it felt a lot more reflective for people and there was a lot more people there than I have ever seen. The service was very poignant.

“I’m thrilled with how the event went especially after the hard work of the staff involved.”
