FINALISTS from Trafford will be keeping their fingers and toes crossed at the Greater Manchester Sports Awards being held on Friday.

The glittering event at The Point Emirates Old Trafford will include entrants from across Greater Manchester and will be presented by BBC Radio Manchester host Chelsea Norris with guest speaker Claire Lomas, a sporting fanatic and campaigner.

Individuals from Trafford up for awards, include Ken and Margaret Clarke, who both used exercise to overcome health conditions.

Both are now keen advocates of leading a healthy life and are a positive role model for people who attend the same gym.

Malc Sterling has been a driving force behind the Old Trafford Junior Parkrun after realising the benefits that running would have for young people.

Initially, he set up the regular run around his local park and with the support of a few other volunteers. His dedication to providing this activity has ensured local kids have an opportunity to stay active.

Jane Dennison is a huge driving force with the Mile Shy Club. Jane provides coaching on a weekly basis to support hundreds of people. Her reputation and the quality of her coaching have led to her mentoring several other coaches. She’s secured funding to qualify other coaches and has also developed Mile Shy Clubs in other locations in the UK. She also helps to support charities to help make a difference to others.

Jill Langley has been dedicated to Urmston Tennis Club over the past 10 years and in that time made a difference to the lives of hundreds of players. Her efforts have been the bedrock for the success of the club. She has been a driving force behind developing the club’s coaching provision and outreach to schools and the community. Her positivity and drive has drawn people to the club ensuring that all that attend have a positive experience.

Gorse Hill Primary School champions physical exercise by offering diverse, fun activities for its pupils which have included ice skating and Bollywood dance. The school has a motivated team of young leaders who are extremely proactive in helping with the delivery of school sport which hosts different clubs every day and forms links with local sports clubs.
