MORE than 100 people are interested in joining a new ‘Friends of Winsford Town Park’ group, following a sign-up session held last week.

Winsford Town Council hosted a sign-up session at the park last Friday to encourage volunteers to join in and support the green space which has been overhauled to the tune of £900,000.

John Malam, a Winsford resident who proposed the idea, said: “There was a good turnout for the sign-up session, and more than 100 people have now said they would like to be part of the Friends group.

“It was particularly good to meet Jo Fawcett and Liam Hopkins and to hear them speak about their work on the park – Jo with the planting scheme, which is based on the prairie planting of Piet Oudolf, the renowned Dutch garden designer, and Liam whose sculptures are influenced by the shape of salt crystals.

“Jo Fawcett will be working with the Friends, and is planning a series of seasonal gardening activities for people to get involved with — no previous experience required.

“Liam mentioned the lighting for the sculptures. Each sculpture is to have an uplighter in the plinth, which will shine a soft white light up and through the crystals, possibly on a timer to match the local street lighting. He pointed out how the lighting should create interesting shadows, which opens up another dimension to the work.

“The information panel has been fixed in place, and the Winsford History Society is going to use it to the tell the story of the area in the past. The next step will be the formality of electing a committee and adopting a constitution for the Friends.”
