THE head teacher of a school in Great Budworth has inspired his pupils by completing a triathlon.

Richard Pollock, from Cransley School, was one of hundreds taking part in the Cheshire Triathlon at Barony Park on Sunday, May 20.

Mr Pollock, who had been training for the event since the start of the year, completed a 500 metre swim and a 21 kilometre bicycle ride, before running 6.5 kilometres to finish – which included an extra, unscheduled lap.

“I was uncertain before doing it given the heat of the day, but I’d put the training in to make sure I was ready and, on the day, I kept myself well hydrated,” Mr Pollock said.

“The swim was a delight in the weather, the cycle was inspiring going through the beautiful countryside, but the final run was heavy going.

“I ended up running an extra lap, but it wasn’t through personal choice. It was because I’d lost track of how much I’d ran by that point. I guess it was a lap of honour.

“Nevertheless, I’m proud of my achievement, and the children are too. It’s inspired them to do more exercise, and it’s something they’ve found very rewarding.”

The head teacher was joined by his family and a number of supporters, which made for a great occasion.

“The atmosphere was wonderful,” Mr Pollock added. “It was very collaborative, everybody was supporting the participants at every stage, and there was great camaraderie among those taking part.”

And he is now looking towards next year’s triathlon, hoping to take more of the Cransley School staff with him.

“I’ve already booked my place on for next year’s event, and I think there will be a fleet of staff joining me.

“I hope I’ve persuaded others from the school to take part with me. It’s a great thing to be involved in and I’m glad I’ve ticked it off the bucket list.”
