POLICE investigating an incident of violent disorder in Middlewich are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

At 1am on Sunday, May 20, a man and woman went to enter the gates to Wallcroft Gardens off Wheelock Street when a number of people ran across to the couple and started to attack the woman.

A black saloon car also pulled up alongside the couple where more people jumped out of the vehicle. The woman, aged 21, was hit in the face while the man was kicked and punched numerous times.

The man, aged 25, made attempts to get away from his attackers but was hit again and fell to the floor.

Some of the group then ran off towards a large supermarket up Southway while the rest got back into the black saloon car and drove off towards Darlington Street.

The offenders are described as being dressed in black with some of the group wearing shorts and some with scarves over their faces.

At least two women were also in the group of more than ten people.

The woman was treated at hospital for minor injuries and the man suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Constable Thomas Towe, of Crewe LPU, said: “Firstly I would like to reassure the local community that this was an isolated incident and they can expect to see extra patrols in the area.

“The incident itself was a nasty and unprovoked attack on two innocent members of the public and I would urge anyone who was in the area or has any information to contact police on 101.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting IML 69121 or Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111
