A MAN who is charged with arson with intent after a fire which caused devastating damage to a Northwich high school made his first appearance in court today.

Philip Day, of Saltash Close in Runcorn, appeared at Chester Magistrates Court.

His case was sent to Chester Crown Court, to be heard on March 27, and the 55-year-old has been remanded in custody.

Day was arrested on Monday following an investigation into to blaze at University Cheshire Academy Northwich (UCAN) in Rudheath on Sunday, February 25.

The alarm was raised at 6am and 12 fire engines pumps and an aerial appliance were dispatched to the school in Shipbrook Road, Rudheath.

It is believed that the fire broke out in two separate roofs at the school.

A Cheshire Police spokesman said: "Anyone with information that could assist officers is asked to call 101, quoting incident 174 of February 25.

"Information can also be passed anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Firefighters used several main jets and hose reels to tackle the fire and wore breathing apparatus due to concerns of potential asbestos.

The fire was contained in around three hours and crews are expected to remain at the scene for most of Sunday to dampen down and make the site safe.

Officers from Cheshire Police assisted with road closures in the area.

The school was closed for all pupils on Monday but was opened to Year 11 pupils only today, as Day appeared in court.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, Year 10s will also be invited back into school.
