AN ‘essential’ extension to Winnington Park Primary School has been completed as it accommodates dozens more pupils each year.

Teachers and schoolchildren began using the new building after returning from the Christmas break.

In the past four years pupil numbers have increased from 217 in September 2014 to 307 now, with the school’s catchment area becoming more densely populated following the launch of Winnington Village.

Jane Dale, headteacher at Winnington Park, has welcomed the opening of the much-needed new building.

She told the Guardian: “As a result of the growing demand for school places in the Winnington catchment area, the completion of a new teaching block of eight classes and a new hall has provided essential space.

“The school has experienced a steady increase in numbers in all year groups and the additional capacity will ensure sufficient pupil places for children living in Winnington.”

The new accommodation consists of additional classrooms and intervention spaces.

Cheshire West and Chester Council identified a need to expand the school in September 2016, with the Winnington Village development failing to provide a new school for the area.

From 217 in September 2014, Winnington Park’s pupil population rose to 244 in September 2015, 274 in September 2016, and its current figure of 307.

Mrs Dale believes the expansion will ensure the school is prepared for the future – both in terms of its size, and for offering a quality space for education.

“A wonderful learning environment has been created for the pupils,” she added.

“The necessary infrastructure has enhanced the school buildings to ensure they are fit for purpose and support the delivery of a comprehensive educational curriculum.

“Renovations to the existing building have created an outstanding setting for early years, including nursery children, and Key Stage 1 pupils.

“This is an exciting opportunity for Winnington Park Primary and Nursery School.”
