THE mum of a Hebden Green schoolgirl with Cockayne syndrome will lose her long locks to raise funds for the charity which helps her.

Becca Flood, from Barnton, is raising money for Amy and Friends – the charity which supports her daughter Sophia, 5, who has the condition which affects growth and mobility.

She has already raised more than £600 ahead of her cut on Saturday, which will see her lose 20ins of hair.

Becca's lost locks will also be donated to the Little Princess Trust, which makes wigs for girls who have lost their hair due to medical reasons.

"There is no cure for Cockayne syndrome, and it is such a rare disorder," Becca said.

"But Amy and Friends do a number of projects and hold conferences to raise awareness of the condition, and support those affected by it."

Last year Becca raised £1,247 to pay for a specialist tricycle which would stop Sophia becoming a 'prisoner in her own home' by developing her strength and balance, and allowing her to play.

Becca added: "She really loves it. To see her riding it on her own has been incredible.

"Until you have a child with an additional need like Sophia's, you don't realise what specialist equipment there is out there."
