MIDDLEWICH Town’s players have doled out a thrashing that co-manager Ross Speight has been predicting at just the right time.
A 6-1 success against Golborne last weekend is an ideal way to prepare for a Cheshire FA Amateur Cup first-round clash with former winners West Kirby this afternoon, kick-off 3pm.
The West Cheshire League Premier Division side conquered Rudheath in the final two years ago.
“We’ve been creating chances and I knew things would click,” said Speight.
“West Kirby know what it takes to win this competition, and we’re often told how good sides from their league are.
“I expect them to give us a tough test too.
“However we’re starting to reap the benefit of the work we did during pre-season, and we’re ready for the challenge.”
Middlewich Town 6-1 Golborne Sports
MIDDLEWICH Town showed the ruthlessness in front of goal that their management team had been asking for, and Golborne Sports were on the receiving end.
The Witches rise to second in Cheshire League One as a reward.
They ran out convincing victors too last Saturday at Seddon Street, where George Hopkins applied a finishing touch to Sam Wakefield’s cross to put them in front inside two minutes.
Wakefield then fired into the top corner from outside of the penalty area, only for the visitors to halve the deficit when Sam Rimmer replied with a fiercely-struck free-kick.
Town moved through the gears in the second half though, and restored a two-goal advantage when Wakefield doubled his personal tally with a low drive.
Substitutes James Smith, Mitch Weedall and Rory Gorton all then added their names to the score-sheet after coming off the bench.
