TIGERS can claim to be the outstanding side in the Mid Cheshire Super League after completing a double on Monday.

Already crowned as Division One champions after winning all but one of their matches, they added a Mike Johns Memorial Handicap Knockout title to their collection.

They proved too strong for Lemmings at Lostock Social Club, recording a 5-1 victory.

Eric Baker claimed the only point for the runners-up when he edged out Geoff Pye.

Tigers had seen off lower-ranked Vikings in the semi-finals, while Lemmings secured their spot as a reward for beating Raptors.

A race to finish first in Division One had been decided after Tigers despatched Sparks in their final fixture, leaving them two points clear of Victoria Club.

The Holmes Chapel-based outfit’s season reached an underwhelming conclusion though when they were awarded a whitewash success over Wreckers when their opponents were unable to field a team.

Cobras were the runaway victors in Division Two, where an unblemished record left them 38 points clear of second-placed Hawks after a dozen matches.

Bears matched the latter’s points total, but were squeezed out of the runners-up position by virtue of winning fewer games.

Snakes took top spot in Division Three by the narrowest of margins, beating rivals Vikings to the title after a whitewash of Rangers in their final fixture.

Martin Selby thwarted Vikings; the Kinetics man beat Steve Buffey in straight sets to claim the only success for his side in a 9-1 reverse.

That point separated leading teams in the table.

Meanwhile this year’s Mid Cheshire Championships, including finals for each of the league’s singles and doubles competitions, is due to take place at Winnington Park Recreation Club tonight, Wednesday.

Play starts at 7pm.
