RESIDENTS are urged to back calls for the Boundary Commission to bring together Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich into a single Parliamentary constituency.

The call comes from Northwich Town Council, which is seeking the public’s support to help see its proposal, which it believes would provide better, more effective representation to Northwich people, become a reality.

Northwich is in the Weaver Vale constituency, and would move into the new constituency of Eddisbury and Northwich under the Boundary Commission’s review of Parliamentary constituencies.

The review would see Northwich, Hartford, Leftwich and Kingsmead move out of the current Weaver Vale constituency, with Weaverham remaining.

Winsford and Middlewich are in the Eddisbury and Congleton constituencies respectively, with Middlewich remaining in Congleton under the commission’s proposals.

Speaking at the commission’s public hearing in Chester on Thursday, town councillor Andrew Cooper said: “The natural and obvious constituency in mid Cheshire would unite the three salt towns of Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich into a single constituency.

“The three towns form a triangle in mid Cheshire and have a long-standing shared industrial heritage.

“Whether its transport links, employment centres, schools or colleges, the community ties between the three towns are incredibly strong.

“Through recent efforts such as the Mid Cheshire Development Board to look after the area’s regeneration, or initiatives such as the Mid Cheshire Rail Link Campaign, Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich are already working together to change mid Cheshire for the better.

“The opportunity to create a single constituency for mid Cheshire, providing for a single representative advocating for these towns, is too good to miss.”

Town councillors are hoping residents will take part in the commission’s consultation and support the town council’s proposal.

Cllr Sam Naylor said: “It’s really important that people get involved in the Boundary Commission’s consultation and let them know what you think.

“With Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich being covered by four constituencies at the moment, there’s a lot of confusion about where exactly the boundaries are, and who the MP is.

“I bet the MPs are confused about whose job it is to speak for mid Cheshire. This is a chance to change all that and give us the voice we need to speak for our community.”

Residents can have their say until December 5 by visiting bce2018.org.uk.

The Boundary Commission will carry out consultation exercises, involving public hearings and written representations before producing its final report to Parliament in October 2018.
