A HAWAIIAN theme will be on show in Northwich later this month as one of the town's top amateur musical theatre groups put on a family favourite.

Mid Cheshire Musical Theatre Company has announced that it will perform the much loved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific' at the Grange Theatre Hartford, from September 28 to October 1.

The shows will start at 7.30pm, with a matinee at 2pm on Saturday, October 1, which is suitable for children.

From the moment you enter the theatre guests will be transported to a Pacific island in WW2 and you can sit back to enjoy a lively performance, with some audience participation, with audiences encouraged to come dressed in character.

Even if just a Hawaiian shirt and a lei garland, vintage dress with a straw hat etc, grass skirts, or uniforms, nurses, white t-shirts and jeans there is so much choice.

The group is keen to add that while it is not compulsory it will add to the fun of the performances.

Tropical cocktails and garlands will be on sale as well.

The show is hilarious at times but also poignant.

The story is based on the the real-life anecdotes of an American naval commander stationed in the area in the War, and follows the love stories of Nellie, a lively nurse from Little Rock Arkansas, who falls in love with Emile, a French exiled planter.

But his half-native children prove a stumbling block for a girl raised in the Deep South.

Similarly the young Lt Cable falls for Liat, a local native girl, but once again her colour proves to be an insurmountable obstacle to their union

.Such were the social codes of that time when mixed race relationships were seen as very undesirable and even illegal in some states.

The very familiar musical numbers include 'Some enchanted evening', 'Younger than Springtime', 'I'm in love with a wonderful guy', Bali Ha'i', 'Happy Talk', 'Gonna wash that man right outa my hair', and 'Honeybun'.

Tickets are on sale now, with group prices from as little as £10.
