MIDDLEWICH Town Council has been urged to support the ‘heroic achievement’ of local residents in raising funds to launch a legal challenge to the planned waste recycling centre in the town.

The popular campaign collected more than £2,000 in three days towards legal fees for an action group set up to spearhead the challenge.

The campaign was launched after a majority of town councillors voted against helping to fund air quality tests in the fight against the ANSA waste transfer site.

Cllr Mike Hunter said: “What the campaign has done, in just three days, is a heroic achievement. They have raised this money in next to no time, and maybe council members who turned their back on the campaign will realise the strength of feeling in the town.”

Cllr Carol Bulman added, “It’s disappointing that campaigners have so far had no help from the Council.

"It’s obvious, when you see the huge number of people who attended the campaign’s action meeting recently, and the continued high turnout for the protests at the site, that this town does not want the recycling centre located here. The effects on air pollution and congestion will be catastrophic.”

Cllr David Williams concluded, “The sensible thing for Middlewich Town Council to do is to support the residents after the amazing campaign organised by Cllr David Latham. We call on the council to at least match the £2000 which has already been raised.”
