A SUMMER music festival thwarted by adversity at every turn this year proved that the show must go on.

The Verdin Park Music Festival took place from 2pm to 10.30pm on Saturday.

Gloomy weather meant a limited turnout in the afternoon, with the crowds arriving at the Northwich town centre park with their picnics as conditions brightened up in the evening.

They set up in time for Mark Williams, the Robbie Williams tribute act, to start his swing set at 7.30pm, but the performer only managed one song before the generator blew.

Cllr Alison Gerrard, who has organised the free event for three years in a row on behalf of Northwich Town Council, said: "When you organise something like this you put your heart and soul into it and just think 'oh my word, can anything else go wrong?'

"It seemed to be a bit of a disaster but the ones that stayed really got into it all again really quickly and it finished off as a great evening."

While the town council team waited for a new generator to be delivered, Northwich singer Rebecca Holland encouraged the audience to move a little closer to the stage and gave them an acoustic set to enjoy.

Then, when the new generator was set up, organisers realised the AA batteries had run out for the radio microphone.

But this issue was soon solved with a trip to the nearby garage, then Robbie could strut his stuff as night fell and Rebecca also returned to great applause.

Cllr Gerrard said she was happy with the musical variety on stage throughout the day.

"I was really chuffed – we had a bit of rock to Bob Marley to Elvis and finishing off with Robbie and a bit of pop," she said.

"There was something in the mix for everyone."

She added: "As long as people enjoyed it and will remember it then that's all that matters."
