PRIMARY school children are asking the public to help them share in special celebrations by buying a charity single.

The whole of Davenham Primary, including all the teachers, were involved in recording their version of a timeless classic from the early 1980s, Celebration by Kool and the Gang.

The recording of the single, which should be available from next month, is part of celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the school moving to its new building, and is being organised by FODS, the Friends of Davenham School.

The single will sold to raise money for the school’s charities and FODS, and will be promoted via social media.

Five hundred copies are to be pressed, and the single will be available as a CD for £3 and a download for 79p.

It was recorded with the help of Mid Cheshire College, which will be releasing it on CD and digital formats such as iTunes and Spotify through the college record label Inclusive Records.

“FODS has organised and commissioned the single in collaboration with Mid Cheshire College, who have recorded and produced it,” said FODS member Gareth Hind.

“We have bought licences to allow us to produce the single and sell it as a CD and an online download.

“We intend to sell the single, with a 50/50 split between the school’s three charities, and aim to market it using social media to encourage as many people to buy it on iTunes.”

The single was recorded on Tuesday in the school, where the hall and staff room were converted into recording studios, and all 287 pupils took part.

“The atmosphere at the recording was awesome, and the children had a great time,” said Gareth.

“The head teacher, Mr Hilditch, was very funny doing his lines, and got the giggles each time.”

The children were helped to record the single by Steve Millar and Sam Johnson, who are studying for a music technology diploma at Mid Cheshire College, and Joel Nally, the college’s programme area leader for performing arts.

“This was a great opportunity for our learners to work with the local community,” said Joel.

“There were some talented singers at the school, and we look forward to collaborating with them again.”

The primary school supports the Cheshire Down’s Syndrome Support Group, The Joshua Tree and the special baby care unit at Leighton Hospital, and is having a celebration day on June 30.
