A GASTROPUB and wedding venue in Northwich announced its shock closure on Thursday, leaving customers saddened and frustrated and 20 people out of work.

Staff at The Duke of Portland, in Lach Dennis, informed supporters of its fate on social media.

In a statement on Facebook they said: "It is with deep regret that the Duke of Portland finished trading today.

"From all the staff at the Duke we would like to thank everyone who supported us over the last three years it has been a true pleasure to serve you all."

The pub, in Holmes Chapel Road, was billed as a 'friendly village pub and kitchen' which also offered a wedding service that included civil ceremonies in the restored hay barn in the gardens and exclusive hire of the restaurant and grounds.

Customers who had booked a wedding with the venue said on Facebook that they do not know where to turn and have not had any response about where they stand.

The Guardian contacted co-owner Michael Massey, who ran the pub with chef Emmanuel Bannon since they took over from the Belle Epoque in 2012.

He said he was no longer connected with the Duke of Portland.

"I've not been with the Duke of Portland for well over a month and a half so it came as much as a shock to me as anyone else," he said.

A former member of staff, who did not wish to be named, said: "So much hard work and time went into that place and it's such a shame.

"I'd like to take it upon myself to thank everyone who ever stood by us and supported us throughout."

Davenham mum Julie Duff, from Cheshire Downs Syndrome Support Group, said: "From the charity's point of view we are gutted and have sent our condolences to them.

"They've always been huge supporters of ours and always been a welcoming pub for the kids to go to, we're devastated by the news."
