CAR tax dodgers were dealt a crushing blow following a joint operation between Cheshire police and the DVLA.

Twelve untaxed cars parked in Northwich were clamped and now owners face a hefty fine or seeing their cars crushed if they can't produce a valid tax disc.

The two-day operation started yesterday, Tuesday, and within the first 30 minutes seven cars in Alan Street had been clamped and served with a notice.

Before midday a further five cars in the Witton area were clamped and as the Guardian went to press the operation was targeting more vehicles that had been reported to PCs Rob Astbury and Leanne Huddart.

Sgt Andy Smith, from Northwich CAT team, said: "We have had an increase in the number of reports from the public about untaxed vehicles.

"We're very keen to reassure people that we are acting on them and this operation is a good example of us working in partnership with the local community and other agencies."

Vehicle owners have 24 hours to pay a fine and produce a valid tax disk before their car is recovered and taken to a DVLA storage site.

Sgt Smith added: "If somebody's car is recovered it can be up to a £500 charge.

"If they can't provide a valid tax disc in 24 hours a surety of £120 must be paid before the vehicle can be released and this goes up to £160 after 24 hours.

"If they can present a valid tax disc to the DVLA they will get £120 back.

"If they don't claim the car back in 14 days then it will be crushed."
