UNEMPLOYMENT rates in east Cheshire have reached an all-time low with only 1.2 per cent out of work in the borough.

The figure for the Congleton constituency, which includes Middlewich, is even lower, recording 0.9 per cent of people unemployed, and falling below one per cent for the first time.

Clr Michael Jones, Council leader, said: “These unemployment figures are fantastic. More families can truly celebrate having employment and money to spend this Christmas.”

“It is not just the place to live and work, but the place to find work.

“When you look at the unemployment rates of Cheshire East, I stand proud as a leader who has seen the number of people in work increase to an all-time high.

“Advanced engineering and scientific research and development are all key to our economic success. Production is the major contributor to our economic output and employment in manufacturing is well above the national average.”

The number of 18 – 24-year-olds not in education, employment, or training and claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance has also dropped in the borough from 2.7 per cent on last year to just 2.2 per cent in October 2014.
