PUPILS from Wistaston Academy were among those taking part in the launch of an innovative programme designed to encourage physical activity among children.

The launch of the ‘100 mile challenge’, a joint initiative between Active Cheshire and New Balance saw 1,280 pupils walk a mile each to kick off the initiative, which is part of New Balance SparkStart, a global charitable initiative focused on improving the health, well-being and self-esteem of children through movement.

The challenge will run throughout the 2014/15 academic year and pupils can reach the target by running, swimming, walking, jogging or cycling 100 miles during the period in school or at home.

Participating schools will record each pupil’s miles and as a reward schools and participating pupils will receive some exciting prizes along the way.

Anne Boyd, CEO of Active Cheshire, said: “It is critical that we introduce and embed active habits among children in their formative years.

“We are delighted to see the commitment of New Balance and local schools to get children active in a fun and engaging manner.”
