ST Helen’s Church tower was the location for 30 fundraising daredevils on Saturday.

Following a briefing in the bell chamber the group climbed up the narrow spiral staircase to emerge into bright sunshine and enjoy spectacular views over Northwich – all in a bid to raise funds for Christian Aid.

Then came the moment when they had to step backwards over the parapet 100 feet above the ground and trust in the instructor, the ropes and their courage to make a safe descent.

Cheered by onlookers, friends and family they landed to applause.

Everyone was made welcome in the church with activities, a film, a Fairtrade stall and a constant supply of tea and cake.

One of the abseilers, Rebekah Knight, 15, said: “It was fantastic once you got over the edge but I nearly got grabbed by a gargoyle on my way down.”

Rev Alison Harris, who said £5,500 was raised as a result of the event, added: “This was such a great day.

“Our church’s tag-line is ‘Serving Christ, Serving the Community’ and this has been one of the ways that we have contributed towards serving our global community.”

This is the first time Christian Aid have held a sponsored abseil with a church in the north-west.
