SHOPS and businesses of Northwich’s yesteryear are featured in this week’s Remember When after two intriguing advertisements were brought in by a Lostock man.

Keith Adams thought Guardian readers may be interested in looking at the adverts, which feature Fred R Yarwood’s footwear and the Post Office.

“I was given them a couple of years back and with them being so old thought they’d be good to bring in,” he said.

Both the adverts, which have been framed, are full of interest for those interested in Northwich town centre’s history.

Fred R Yarwood was at 29 Witton Street, which has kept its footwear tradition as it is currently Shoe Zone.

The shop boasted ‘a large stock of boots, leggings etc’ as well as ‘boots specially made for golfing, hunting, fishing etc’ and also pointed out that it was ‘contractor to HM the King’s Auxiliary Forces, patronised by the nobility’.

The advert also features the shop’s telephone number 3y2.

The second advert appears to be for a livery stable at the General Post Masters, in Cross Street, which no longer exists, and refers to the branch office at 28 Witton Street, now Quality Save.

Keith said: “I can’t remember where that was in Cross Street and I’m 80 years old.”

This advert highlights ‘elegant wedding carriages, omnibuses, char-a-banc and waggonettes for private and picnic parties’ as well as ‘post horses and private carriages for hire’.

It also shows the stable next to T Astles joiner and undertaker.
