A MAJOR part of Northwich’s future is nearing completion and will welcome visitors in October.
Northwich Quay, the marina at the new Hayhurst Quay, is holding an open day between 10am and 1pm on October 13 for people to see how it is progressing.
Land and Water, the company behind the quay, invited the Guardian on board to get a feel for the facilities.
Neil Warren, director of Land and Water Estates, said: “We envisage the marina being used for a mix of permanent moorings and visitors.
“Of the boats that will be attracted here, there will be twice as many people coming and spending money in Northwich’s shops, restaurants and cafes. It will be good for the town and everyone in it, something we can be proud of.”
Northwich Quay, on the River Weaver, will have secure space for around 50 boats, with moorings that raise and lower with the level of the river, electric hook-up and water.
An oak-clad facilities building will allow boaters to stretch out and relax as well as showers and toilets.
Land and Water has built more than 25 marinas and Northwich Quay is the fourth that it will operate.
John Tackley, chairman of the River Weaver Navigation Society, said: “It’s the first of the positive things that are happening on this site and apart from the fact that we are going to have some boats here, there will be waterfront access.”
Neil said: “We look forward to working with the River Weaver Navigation Society so we can both make the river flourish.
“It’s a focal point – people love to look at boats and the river and now, rather than turning its back on the water, Northwich will be facing it.”
