AN incredible feat of fromage was achieved in South Cheshire this week.

The world record for the largest ever cheesecake was shattered by a colossal 2,100kg monster.

A crack team of Asda and Arla colleagues made the giant dessert at the 2013 Nantwich International Cheese Awards. 

TheWorld’s cheese makers descended on Nantwcich for the 2013 International Cheese Awards.

A Claxstone Smooth Blue produced by Long Clawson Dairy in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, was crowned Supreme Champion, winning the accolade ahead of 4,285 other competitors.

This year’s competition on Dorfold Park saw 283 categories in all, with competitors from 27 countries represented at the 116th annual celebration of all things cheese.

A panel of expert judges from the dairy industry judged an Extra Creamy Gorgonzola produced by Arrigoni of Italy as the Nantwich Reserve Supreme Champion.

Eleswhere, artisan cheesemaker, Butlers Farmhouse Cheeses, which operates Nantwich’s Ravens Oak dairy, took home more trophies than any other cheese maker in the country, with six gongs awarded to its range of artisan cheeses.

Belton Cheese of nearby Whitchurch won the National Westminster trophy for the highest number of gold awards, while Marks & Spencer won the Supreme Retailer Award.

Richard Paul, show chairman, said: “We had 4,286 entries in all, which is a record, and the standard across the board was extremely high – our panel of 190 judges really did have their work cut out to make their selections.

“They selected the Claxstone Smooth Blue – an extremely deserving Supreme Champion. It, and all the category winners and runners up, can now feature a gold, silver or bronze International Cheese Awards label on pack.

“We will now be continuing to working hard to educate consumers on what that logo means – that if they spot it they can be safe in the knowledge that the product has been judged, by experts, as outstanding.”
