CHESHIRE Chord Company want to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony – or at least Warrington.

The award-winning all women barbershop chorus are launching a six-week learn to sing course on January 9, suitable for anyone 18 or over from all walks of life.

So if you just belt out the hits in the shower or have sang in the past and want to get back into it, this is your chance.

Each week those attending the lessons at Bruche Primary School will learn something new about singing in unaccompanied four-part harmony, which will culminate with a performance on the last night for family and friends. Committee member and public relations officer Julie Phillips joined the group following a learn to sing course five years ago.

The 39-year-old said: “I was unsure about going on my own but I am so pleased that I braved it. I’ve made friends for life and I couldn’t ever imagine not being able to sing with such a fabulous bunch of women each week.

“We’re a really friendly crowd and everyone that joins will be made to feel welcome.”

Those who sign up can simply enjoy the course on its own or are welcome to audition to become a member of the a capella choir.

They will be in good company – Cheshire Chord Company has taken gold, silver or bronze in every national competition it has entered and even performed for the Queen as part of the 2012 Jubilee celebrations.

It was formed in 1993 by 12 women, who rehearsed in the back room of the Jolly Thresher pub in Lymm.

Now the chorus has around 65 voices with an age range of 18 to 70-plus and they are currently the women’s retiring British barbershop champions.

Julie, who balances her time between being a deputy head teacher at a primary school, family life and singing, added: “We love to sing and perform, new fresh songs with great choreography.

“We’re very lucky in that we’ve had some great songs arranged for us in the past with our most recent one being a Whitney Houston medley. It really is one of our favourites.

“We’re able to perform to a really high standard and that’s due to our amazing team who come every week with bounds of enthusiasm and expertise.

“Our musical director Joanne Braham is an inspiration. We’re a super friendly bunch and look forward to getting together every Thursday night. It’s a night away from every day pressures where you can sing, be with friends and basically have a great time learning new things. We get to sing in some amazing venues including St Elphin’s Church, Chester Cathedral, Tatton Park and St George’s Hall and in April we’ll be heading off to Spain to represent Warrington globally compete at SAB (Spanish Association of Barbershop).”

If you want to see what it is all about, Cheshire Chord Company will be at St Elphin’s Church tonight, Thursday, for their Christmas concert from 7.30pm.

Julie said: “It’s a really magical, festive evening. We did the same last year and it was a really lovely event. St Elphin’s church is a beautiful venue and we feel very lucky to be able to perform there.”
