ZOMBIES are set to takeover an abandoned ship when a new attraction opens next year.

Former passenger ferry the Duke of Lancaster has stood empty for more than 30 years after it grounded in the Dee estuary in Flintshire, north east Wales.

The Zombie Infection company plans to start running events on the ship in January.

Customers visiting the attraction will try to tackle actors dressed as zombies with the aim of stopping a virus and 'saving humanity'.

Greg Rudman, marketing and event manager, said: “Over the last few years we (Zombie Infection) have worked hard to build a strong and trustworthy relationship with the owners of the Duke of Lancaster ship.

"The impressive ocean liner has seen its fair share of disappointment to date so it is with great pleasure that after safety and logistic improvements, a lot of paint, love and affection we are now able to bring this amazing venue to our international fan base in 2019 and hopefully beyond.

"We want to assure the local and national population that we will (in partnership with its owners) take good care of her and bring her well and truly back to her glory days."

Built in 1956, the Duke of Lancaster previously ferried passengers and then cars between Heysham and Belfast in the 1950s and 60s before it was retired in 1978.

Campaigners have appealed for years for the ship to be renovated after it was left to rot and been defaced by graffiti since the mid 1980s.

The new 'immersive' experience will see visitors 'chased, challenged and instructed' by cast members on the ship over two-and-a-half hours.

Greg added: "It's not only a wonderful place to visit but probably one of the greatest locations to do what we do."

The Ship - Zombie Infection is £89.99 per person but the price reduces to £81.99 each for groups of 10 to 18.
