I ENJOY reading Billy Nomates’ articles in the Guardian. I find them interesting, witty, and lyrical in some respects.
A few weeks ago he commented on Hartford residents and the way they were upset at construction work in the village.
He made reference to the new church hall being a monstrosity. I thought he might have quoted Prince Charles by referring to it as a ‘carbuncle on the Hartford skyline’.
Billy made further reference to the good people of Hartford being ‘posh’, and that some who live there relieve themselves before taking a bath. I thought a ‘piddle’ referred to someone who worked in a trifling way.
After looking at the grouchy features of Billy at the head of his article, I think it would be well advised for him and Mrs Nomates to follow the practice of the good people of Hartford.
