I WRITE in response to the letters concerning the recent emergency budget.

Howard Thorp criticises it as regressive and reactionary It would have been a whole lot worse without the Liberal Democrat input.

Our deficit is the largest of the G20 group of the wealthiest nations and our budget was designed to deal with it while sparing those who can least afford to contribute.

I am uncertain what Rosie Daffurn is most concerned about.

Nick Clegg is acting responsibly and the coalition agreement contains 35 major policy proposals from our manifesto.

Among these are the increase in the tax threshold, the pupil premium that helps children from disadvantaged backgrounds, the increase in the state pension, the abolition of ID cards and a referendum on our unfair voting system, all included in the budget.

Labour left each of us with £22,400 of debt that would have cost £70bn in interest alone each year if no action had been taken.

This is more than we currently spend on schools and defence combined.

The budget has laid the foundations of a fairer society while tackling this legacy of reckless lending and spending.
