Size of incinerators is not disputed

IN reply to Kevin Grey’s recent letter, Guardian February 17, may I just refute some of your comments?

The size of the chimneys and the plants is a documented fact, Covanta of course deny it.

As for the lorry issue, if Mr Grey believes the railhead will bring in most of the waste, well, he is simply well wide of the mark. He asks where the proof was regarding emissions?

I can tell him, having been a student of this subject before even CHAIN came into existence, that he has only to look at the Internet, where there is a wealth of official Government information regarding incinerators and the dangers they represent to the health of local people.

There is also conclusive evidence that house prices decline by up to 20 per cent when one of these monstrosities is built in their vicinity. Lorries will bring in the majority of the waste because not all sites where the waste comes from have railheads or are even near one, and it is extremely expensive to load and off load any product, especially something as awkward as waste, which comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

Finally, he asks what the companies involved having their bases in India and the USA has to do with the issue? They and their families, and you and your family will not be at risk from the toxic fumes that do emanate from these incinerators, nor will the traffic chaos affect them or you either, nor will the fall in house prices.

I suggest Mr Grey confine himself to things he has a right to talk about and things he has checked his facts on, and leave the people of this area to deal with this problem as they see fit.
